Q: What is the difference between Financial Strategies and Momentive?
Financial Strategies, Inc. is approved to provide pre-discharge debtor education and issue certificates in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code. Momentive is a non-profit credit counseling agency approved to provide pre-filing bankruptcy counseling sessions and issue certificates in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code.

Momentive is not owned, operated, or controlled by Financial Strategies. We believe Momentive to be a quality provider of credit counseling. However Financial Strategies does not assume any responsibility or liability for the counseling provided by Momentive.
Q: Why do I have to complete this course to receive my bankruptcy discharge?
The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 requires individuals filing bankruptcy to complete a Personal Financial Management Course AFTER filing bankruptcy and prior to having their debts discharged. The Financial Strategies, Inc. Personal Financial Management Instructional course meets this requirement.

Q: Where is Financial Strategies, Inc. approved?
Financial Strategies is approved in 47 states, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. Financial Strategies is not approved in Alabama, North Carolina and Oregon.
Q: When do I take the Personal Financial Management Instructional Course?
The Personal Financial Management Instructional Course is to be taken AFTER you have filed bankruptcy but BEFORE your bankruptcy is discharged.

You are ready to take your Personal Financial Management Instructional Course if you have a Bankruptcy Case Number. This number is required for your Certificate of Completion.

Q: What if I fail the course?
You cannot fail this course. As long as you finish the entire course and complete a course evaluation, you will receive the Certificate of Completion.

Q: How do I pay for the course?
You may pay online by debit card or credit card. There is a $5 processing fee if you pay by money order or cashier's checks.
Q: What if I cannot afford to pay for the course?
The course fee will be waived if your attorney is providing legal services for free or your sole source of income is SSI disability payments. Please contact us at
1-877-252-6877 if you believe you qualify for a free course. You will need to provide proof of pro-bono legal services and/or disability income to qualify for the fee waiver.
Q: How long is the course?
It will take approximately 2 hours to complete the course.
Q: How do I take the course?
The course may be completed on-line on any computer with internet access. The course is available 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year.

The course may also be completed by telephone. It is recommended that it be completed using a land line telephone. The telephone course is not valid in Hawaii, Alaska or any other off shore islands.

Q: What information do I need to get started?
To register for the course, you will need to provide the following information:
  • Your full name including first, middle initial, last – required for certificate
  • Home address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Bankruptcy case number – required for certificate
  • Judicial District where your bankruptcy was filed – required for certificate
  • Attorney's name and email address and phone number if you are represented by an attorney
Q: What is my judicial district and how do I find it?
Your judicial district refers to the judicial district where your bankruptcy was filed. If you do not know your judicial district, ask your attorney for this information. Your judicial district is required information for your Certificate of Completion.
Q: Once I've started the course, do I have to complete it all at the same time?
If you are taking the internet course, you may start, stop and save your course at any time. When you log back in, the course will resume where you left off. You also have the option to return to the course at anytime to review sections or print worksheets. There is no additional cost for retaking the course. You may return to the course as often as you like.

The telephone course includes 2 opportunities to take breaks. You may choose to complete the entire course at one time or break it into 3 parts.

Q: How do I receive my Certificate of Completion?
Upon completion of the course, your Certificate of Completion will be sent to your attorney within 3 business days.
Q: Will my attorney receive a copy of my certificate?
A copy of your certificate will be emailed to your attorney if you enter your attorney's name and email address when registering for the course.
Q: Can I get an additional copy of my certificate at a later time?

Q: What do I do with the Certificate of Completion?
You or your attorney will need to file your Certificate of Completion with the Bankruptcy Court.
Q: What if I do not receive my Certificate of Completion?
Once you have completed your course and paid your course fee, your certificate will be sent to you. Q: If my spouse and I are filing a joint bankruptcy, do we each have to complete the course?
Yes. Each person does need to complete the course and receive their own Certificate of Completion. Financial Strategies does offer a couples course which will allow spouses to view the course together. If you would like to take the course together, select the couple’s course when you register and follow the instructions for completing the course.

You may also choose to purchase individual courses and each spouse would complete his/her own course.
